The
Lodge of St. Mary sponsored by the Lodge of Good Fellowship No 276 and was consecrated on Tuesday 14th. June 1870 by
the Provincial Grand Master of Essex, R.W. Bro. R. J. Bagshaw. During the ceremony W.Bro. Arthur Goodchild was duly installed as the Lodge’s
first Worshipful Master.
During
its early years the Lodge met in several different places – mainly the
White Hart Hotel - but subsequently purchased its own hall in New Street
in 1897.
The
Howard Hall was later built and dedicated on Saturday 21st.
April 1934, by R.W.Bro. R. Beale Colvin, Lord Lieutenant of Essex. It was
erected through the benefaction of Bro. J. B. Howard who, in his will,
bequeathed to the Lodge a generous sum for the purpose of building and
furnishing a Masonic Temple, to be afterwards called “The Howard
Hall”.
The
Lodge of St. Mary was sponsored by the Lodge of Good Fellowship No 276 and
has, itself, subsequently sponsored five other Lodges namely Rosslyn
No.1543, Joshua Nunn No. 2154, Cromwell No. 6971, Thomas Paycocke No. 8200
and United Fairways No. 9094.
The
Lodge is now an integral part of the Howard Hall Club which is run on a
strictly business footing with an elected Chairman and committee. The
committee is responsible to all lodges and degrees for the day-to-day
administration of the building and its facilities.
The
Lodge, at present, has some 56 members and meets every 2nd.
Monday of the month between September and April holding
its festival in November. The Lodges of Instruction consist of a
junior LOI, which is for all members who have not acceded to the chair,
(this meets on the 3rd. Thursday of the month) and the senior
LOI, (which meets on the first Monday of the month) which is generally for
all officers to practice the ceremony which is to be held the following
Monday.
