Howard Hall -
Braintree
It is said, that towards the
end of the 1920's, two Brethren of the Lodge of St Mary, No 1312 had the
great misfortune to lose their wives roughly at the same time. One was
W.Bro Charles Saunders, a Chemist of High Street, Braintree, the other
W.Bro John Burgess Howard, a Draper also of High Street, Braintree.
After a short period of time, both of
these Brethren sought the affections of the same lady. The final outcome
was that the lady in question favoured W.Bro Saunders and the liaison
ended in marriage. The unsuccessful suitor, W.Bro John Howard, who had no
family, was to leave his entire considerable fortune to the Lodge of St
Mary, for the purpose of building a new Masonic Temple, to be named the
"Howard Hall" in his memory.
After his death, his wishes were duly
carried out and a Temple and dining facilities to seat 120 people was
built in 1934 at Bocking End, Braintree. |
