The Lodge was consecrated in 1950 and named "Cromwell" because of Oliver Cromwell's family connections with Felsted and its School. Its founders and early members were drawn mainly from local Lodges, in particular The Lodge of St. Mary and Rosslyn Lodge. Cromwell Lodge originally met in the old part of Felsted School, still to be seen depicted in the Lodge banner. With growth, the first move was to Felsted's Memorial Hall, before taking up residence in The Howard Hall in 1979.

Our "grand originals" were proud of their mixed backgrounds, with many varied occupations represented, including a doctor, school masters, farmers, policemen, tailors, retailers, licensees, furnishers, a bookmaker and builders. That variety of source for membership has continued over the years and is now even greater.

This evolution is being seen in other forms too. A "Burns’ Night" has become a regular feature following our January meeting, a Cromwell family lunch at Christmas is always well supported and the Annual Raft Race as well as other group events too.

The Cromwell Lodge in the Province of Essex has fraternal connections with a Lodge of the same name in East Lancashire and occasional exchange visits have been made.

As in many Lodges membership is down a bit but Cromwell remains vibrant.
